A message from the EANS President Torstein R. Meling
September 2025 – Presidential Update
Dear colleagues and EANS members,
In this September newsletter, I want to update you on several important developments that demonstrate EANS’s continued progress in advancing European neuroscience and neurosurgery. These initiatives reflect my ongoing commitment to “Opening doors and building bridges” – expanding opportunities for neurosurgical training and education while strengthening partnerships that benefit our entire neuroscience community.
Welcome to New Individual Membership Committee Members
I am pleased to welcome the 20 new members who have been elected to our Individual Membership Committee. These distinguished colleagues from across Europe will bring fresh perspectives and valuable expertise to our organization’s strategic direction.
I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to the outgoing committee members for their dedicated service and contributions to EANS. Their commitment and expertise have been instrumental in advancing our mission, and we are grateful for their continued support of European neurosurgery.
EANS2025 Vienna Congress Update: Record EACCME Accreditation
I am pleased to inform you that the EANS2025 congress in Vienna has received EACCME accreditation with maximum up to 37 credits – a new record for our organization! This achievement reflects the exceptional quality of our scientific program and educational content.
We have also received and reviewed a record number of scientific abstracts, indicating unprecedented engagement from the European neurosurgical community. This overwhelming response demonstrates the vitality of research across our specialty and promises an outstanding scientific program.
The social program, organized by the EANS office and the local Austrian team with Professor Claudius Thomé, will also be spectacular, providing unique opportunities to experience Vienna’s rich culture and strengthen collegial bonds. In short, don’t miss this opportunity to be part of THE premier European neurosurgical gathering.
EANS Endovascular Fellowship in Partnership with Stryker Neurovascular
I am pleased to announce our partnership with Stryker Neurovascular in support of the EANS Endovascular Fellowship Program. This salaried fellowship will provide a qualified neurosurgical trainee with a one-year program at a European neurovascular center, offering comprehensive training in the full spectrum of neurovascular interventions. This collaboration represents an important step in our mission to enhance specialized training opportunities in the evolving field of endovascular neurosurgery, truly opening doors for the next generation of neurosurgeons.
This “hot off the press” announcement represents a vital step forward in EANS’s mission to elevate neurosurgical education and improve patient care. As endovascular techniques become increasingly important in the management of cerebrovascular conditions, it is essential that the next generation of neurosurgeons receives specialized, hands-on training in this highly technical and evolving field.
The first EANS Endovascular Fellowship will be hosted at Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, starting January 1, 2026. I would like to extend special thanks to Professor Jeroen Boogaarts from the Department of Neurosurgery at Radboud University Medical Center for his fantastic work in developing this project. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, the inaugural fellowship will be awarded to Radboud.
Stryker Neurovascular’s generous support will help cover essential components including the fellow’s living expenses, travel and accommodation costs for mandatory educational meetings, and academic support resources. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to fostering excellence in neurovascular care and education across Europe.
Detailed criteria and application procedures will follow in the coming weeks. This fellowship embodies EANS’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and harmonized education across member countries, helping to shape future leaders in neurosurgery and ultimately improve outcomes for patients with neurovascular diseases across Europe.
Contributing to ESO-EANS-ESMINT Guidelines on Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
EANS will contribute to the upcoming ESO-EANS-ESMINT Guideline on Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH), building bridges between European medical societies through collaborative guideline development. This joint initiative unites the expertise of the European Stroke Organisation (ESO), EANS, and the European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT) to establish comprehensive SAH management recommendations. Our involvement ensures that neurosurgical expertise is fully represented in these clinical guidelines that will shape patient care standards across Europe.
These developments reflect EANS’s position in neurosurgical advancement in Europe. Through educational opportunities, academic work, partnerships, and collaborative guidelines development we continue to support the development of our specialty.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement with EANS. Together, we are shaping the future of neurosurgery across Europe.
Warm regards,
Torstein R. Meling
EANS President
EANS2025 Vienna Congress – Accredited by EACCME for 37 European CME Points!
We are delighted to announce that The EANS2025 Vienna Congress – Annual Congress of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, Vienna, Austria, 05/10/2025 – 09/10/2025, has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) with 37.0 European CME credits (ECMEC®s)!
This is a new record for the EANS Congress and signals the very high value of our scientific programme.
Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
Through an agreement between the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME® credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Information on the process to convert EACCME® credit to AMA credit can be found at https://edhub.ama-assn.org/pages/applications.

Ride for Neurosurgery: Join Us from Berlin to Vienna!
In early October, neurosurgeons from across the globe will gather in Vienna for the EANS2025 Congress, under the inspiring theme: Embracing Collaboration in Neurosurgery.
Community and collaboration have always been at the heart of the EANS mission. Although Europe is known as the veteran continent, its people reinvent themselves by standing together and focusing on shared values.
This year, we aim to challenge ourselves even further and inspire others.
Starting from Berlin, a team of brave neurosurgeons will cycle through Europe: Dresden, Prague, Brno and ultimately reach Vienna for the EANS2025 Congress. Covering a total distance of 700 kilometres, we aim to send a strong message: That much can be achieved through collaboration and community empowerment. Long distances can be covered, difficulties can be overcome, and amazing things can happen.
Join this ambitious project, led by Dr. Rik Demaerel and supported by EANS, and embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, towards the neurosurgical heart of Europe – The EANS Congress!
